Biography Gerhard Haderer

Haderer was born in 1951 in Leonding near Linz, Austria.

After attending the School of Applied Arts for Commercial and Advertising Graphic Design in Linz, he worked as a freelance graphic designer, illustrator, and artist for advertising agencies until 1984. He created panoramic maps for tourism promotion and specialized in photorealistic depictions across all areas of advertising illustration.

Since 1985, he has worked as a cartoonist in Linz.

Gerhard Haderer is considered one of the most prominent satirical cartoonists in the German-speaking world.

In 1985, he published his first cartoons in the Austrian magazine Profil, with the collaboration lasting over 20 years. From 1991 to 2016, his drawings appeared weekly as "Haderer's Wochenschau" in the German stern magazine.

Haderer's cartoons are regularly published in numerous newspapers and magazines in the German-speaking world.

With MOFF., Haderer launched his own comic project in 1997. It ran for 36 issues until 2000. In April 2008, Haderer picked up his drawing pen again for MOFF.. Since then, Haderer's "fine pulp magazine" has been published monthly in the Scherz & Schund Fabrik.

Haderer's body of work also includes more than 30 books, which he has published since 1987, either alone or in collaboration with authors such as Peter Turrini, Elfriede Hammerl, and Josef Hader.

His book "Der Herr Novak: Aufzeichnungen eines Zeitgenossen" has been performed as a play since the fall of 2014, starring Ferry Öllinger. Haderer directed the play, marking his directorial debut.

Haderer’s book, The Life of Jesus, "Das Leben des Jesus" (2002, Ueberreuter Publishing) faced heavy criticism, particularly from the Catholic Church. In Greece, he was charged with blasphemy and, in his absence, was sentenced to six months in prison in January 2005. However, in April 2005, he was acquitted by an Athens appeals court of all charges related to allegedly offending the Orthodox religious community with his book.
